About this Course
My intention for this class is to develop landscape painting skills with travel-friendly materials. Painting on the go gives me the opportunity to admire my surroundings and enjoy the creative process. I love taking early morning walks at my neighborhood lake, admiring the sunrise, and transferring how the view makes me think and feel onto the canvas. I find gouache paints and soft pastels to be wonderful travel companions for on the go artwork. These materials appear like watercolor, but can be used to make corrections more easily. This course utilizes basic gouache and soft pastel techniques in three unique landscape paintings. Each landscape offers practice in various types of composition, texture, and contrast. I hope that this course opens you up to painting different moments of your own life: backyard sunsets, a day in town, or fond memories from your camera roll.
Misty morning chaparral
Utilize a variety of earth tones to convey the softness of early morning in this gouache and pastel piece. Blend pastels into gouache to develop sandy and grassy textures.
Red rocks of Sedona
Practice contrast in your use of complementary colors and strong textures with this landscape painting exercise. Lean into the thickness of gouache and pastels to convey the hardiness of rocks and trees against a soft sky.
Sunrise in Montelparo, Italy
The sunrise painting focuses on portraying light: developing fluffy clouds and a multicolor sky. A palette of greens trains the structuring of hillsides and the horizon line.
About Jennifer Bonneteau
I used to struggle with the same portrait problems you probably face right now—getting stuck in details, playing it safe, and creating stiff results. Everything shifted when I ditched the traditional drawing-first approach and started with shapes and values instead. Light, dark, shape—that's the foundation. Layer into it, build contrast, add expressive marks, and let the face emerge naturally. When you work this way, color stops being about accuracy and starts being about expression. Moss green, magenta, aqua—whatever serves the shapes underneath and makes the portrait sing. That's what this course teaches you: a process that feels natural, freeing, and actually works.
